Pattern for Brooke

This really cute girl named Brooke, who cut my hair while Brittany was out on maternity leave found out she was pregnant a couple of months ago.  Her Mom is going to make the baby bedding, but hates doing bumpers.  No worries!  Here's Piper's Quilts pattern for bumpers (soon to be posted on their blog at www.pipersquilts.com).

The pictures above are a little fancier than the pattern listed below, but your Mom will know what to do if you want something fancier than one fabric.

Piper's Quilts Bumper Pads Pattern

Materials
1 set of bumper pad forms (recommend the poly-fil Nu-Foam by Fairfield)
4-1/2 yards fabric for the bumper covers
Enough 2" bias to make 36 ties (324") or you can use grosgrain ribbon

Instructions

  1. Remove the bumper pads from their package and place them in your crib to make sure they fit.  They should fit fairly loosely.  If the bumper pads overlap, mark them with a marker so that you can trim them down to the correct size.
  2. To trim your bumpers, trim the ends of the pads at the mark you made.  For your side pads, divide the amount of excess to be trimmed across both pads, then cut.
  3. Cut your fabric - Trim your selvage.  On length of grain, cut your fabric down the center so that you have 2 pieces, each 4-1/2 yards long.  Then cut one piece on length of grain again, down the center.  You will use the two pieces with the smaller width for your bumpers.
  4. Measure your bumper pads.  They will likely be somewhere between 25" and 28".  Allow for 1-1/2" at each end and in between each pad.  Note the measurements for the center and end of each pad for  your channels and ties.  For example, if  your ends are 26" and your sides are 25", note that you'll place an end tie 1-1/2" in, then 2 ties 12-1/2" further, etc.  Trim the end of your fabric if necessary.
  5. With right sides together, pin one tie at the top and bottom of each end, then two ties at the top of the center of each pad and at the top of where the channel seam will go.
  6. Once all your ties are pinned, using a 1/4" seam, stitch around the entire rectangle, leaving an 8 - 10" opening at the bottom.  Turn your rectangle right side out so that wrong sides are together and ties are on the outside.  Stitch a channel from top to bottom at the measurements you took previously (Bumpers should be placed as follows: end - side - side - end - side - side).
  7. At the bottom of each section, use your seam ripper to take out 8 - 10" of stitches.  Slide your bumper pad into each section.  This is easiest if you start by folding the bumper pad in half and place it in the end of your pocket.  You will now have a long string of six bumper pads with ties at the top and six 8 - 10" openings along the bottom.  Pin the openings closed and topstitch approximately 1/8" from the edge across the entire bottom.
